About this story

After the June 2025 US strikes on Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, President Trump and his administration repeatedly said Iran's nuclear program or facilities had been "obliterated." Other assessments differed: an early leaked US intelligence assessment estimated a setback of months, the Pentagon later said up to two years, and the IAEA said it could not verify Iran's enriched uranium. The claim came back through the 2026 US–Iran war, as officials described the program both as destroyed and as a continuing threat.

Sep 2026 Trump's "obliterated" claim about Iran's nuclear program: Pickaxe Mountain threat and UN General Assembly speech

After the American strikes of June 2025, Trump said the three sites had been "completely and totally obliterated." Days later, according to Al Jazeera, a leaked preliminary Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) assessment concluded that the sites had been significantly damaged but not destroyed. It estimated that the strikes had set the program back by less than six months. On September 4, 2026, Trump said the United States may strike Pickaxe Mountain "very soon." Al Jazeera reported that the site was left alone in the June 2025 strikes and is "intact," and that no inspector has entered the bombed sites. On September 22, 2026, Trump told the UN General Assembly that in Operation Midnight Hammer the military had "... obliterated their nuclear programme beneath mountains of rubble" (UN News).

Aug 2026 Trump touts "denuclearization of Iran" as an achievement

On Aug. 3, 2026, Trump listed "the denuclearization of Iran" among his administration's major achievements in a Truth Social post (Iran International). In an Aug. 16 Truth Social post, he listed "the essential Denuclearization of Iran" as an accomplishment (PolitiFact). Asked for evidence, White House spokesperson Olivia Wales told PolitiFact that military operations under Trump "obliterated Iran's nuclear facilities." Experts told PolitiFact that the 2025 strikes likely set back Iran's nuclear program but did not eliminate it. They also said the U.S. has not secured Iran's highly enriched uranium, and inspectors have been barred from the sites.

Jul 2026 The "already denuclearized" claim and the Pickaxe Mountain threats

On July 8, at the NATO summit in Turkey, Trump said: "I call it, we denuclearize Iran… And that's happened; they will never have a nuclear weapon" (CNN analysis, syndicated by CBC). The July 9 CNN analysis by Aaron Blake said that before the war that began in February, Trump had spent eight months saying the program had been "obliterated" by the June 2025 strikes. It also said the program had now "magically gone back to 'obliterated' status." On July 13, in an interview with Hugh Hewitt, Trump said the United States could strike Pickaxe Mountain, an underground site near Natanz. Al-Monitor puts the site about one mile from Natanz; ABC describes it as "only miles away." Natanz was one of the three sites American forces bombed in June 2025. ABC reported that Pickaxe Mountain "has been spared in past attacks." ABC also quoted an Arms Control Association expert who said neither the United States nor Israel had tried to target the facility in June 2025. In the same interview Trump said there was "no activity" at the site. Al-Monitor reported that the Institute for Science and International Security had said on July 2 that satellite images from late June showed construction there was ongoing. On July 21, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that American forces would hit the area "pretty soon" (ABC, PBS).

Apr 2026 Prime-time address on Iran

In his April 1, 2026 prime-time address, Trump said of Operation Midnight Hammer, the June 2025 strikes, "we totally obliterated those nuclear sites," as quoted by Slate. FactCheck.org's April 2 article says Trump "has repeatedly used the description 'totally obliterated'" starting the night of the June 2025 strikes. It also says experts and a classified American intelligence report found the sites "were damaged and Iran's uranium enrichment program was set back," but not "completely destroyed." FactCheck.org adds that DNI Tulsi Gabbard told a March 18, 2026 congressional hearing that it was the Intelligence Community's assessment that the strikes "obliterated" Iran's enrichment program. That testimony agreed with Trump's description and differed from the classified report's finding of a setback. This is the split between the "obliterated" claim and official assessments that this thread tracks.

Feb 2026 – Mar 2026 War begins; Gabbard testimony

On Feb 28, 2026, announcing combat operations against Iran, Trump said, "in Operation Midnight Hammer last June, we obliterated the regime's nuclear program at Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan." He also said Iran had "attempted to rebuild their nuclear program." FactCheck.org reported that arms control experts said there was "a lack of evidence" that Iran was rebuilding. It also noted that experts and a classified US intelligence report from 2025 had found the sites damaged, not completely destroyed. On Mar 18, Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard's written Senate testimony said Iran's enrichment program "was obliterated" and that Iran had made no effort to rebuild it. Sen. Mark Warner asked why she left that paragraph out of her spoken opening statement.

Feb 2026 "Obliterated" vs. "a week away"; State of the Union

On Feb 24, 2026, Leavitt said the June 2025 strikes "did, in fact, obliterate Iran's nuclear facilities." She added that this did not mean Iran would never try to rebuild. That evening Trump said in the State of the Union that the US "obliterated Iran's nuclear weapons program." These statements came three days after Witkoff said Iran was "probably a week away" from bomb-making material. They also stood against other public assessments: The Pentagon's public estimate was a setback of one to two years. An initial US assessment had found only one enrichment site mostly destroyed. The White House's own November 2025 National Security Strategy said the strikes "significantly degraded Iran's nuclear program." IAEA inspectors had not been able to visit the bombed sites.

Jul 2025 Only one of three sites destroyed, reports say

Al Jazeera described President Trump's assertion that the American strikes on Iran's nuclear sites, which it dates to 22 June 2025, had "obliterated" Iran's nuclear programme. On 17 July 2025, Reuters reported that NBC News said a new American assessment had found the June strikes destroyed only one of three Iranian nuclear sites. According to Reuters, NBC cited current and former American officials familiar with the matter, and Reuters could not immediately verify the report. According to Al Jazeera, the destroyed site was Fordow. On 18 July, Al Jazeera reported that an unidentified official told the Washington Post, "We definitely can't say it was obliterated," referring to Iran's nuclear programme. Al Jazeera reported that the Pentagon answered both reports by repeating that all three sites were "completely and totally obliterated."

Jun 2025 – Jul 2025 Leaked early intelligence assessment and pushback

An early Defense Intelligence Agency review of the June 2025 American strikes on Iran, "first reported by CNN but later confirmed by the administration," estimated that the attacks had delayed Iran's nuclear program by "a matter of months," according to Military Times. A senior DIA official described it as a "preliminary, low confidence assessment," CBS News reported. President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had said the bombs "obliterated" Iran's nuclear ambitions. At a June 26 Pentagon news conference, Hegseth said the report was leaked "because someone had an agenda to try to muddy the waters and make it look like this historic strike wasn't successful," but he did not deny that it was authentic. During that briefing, Trump asked on Truth Social whether the New York Times and CNN "will be firing the reporters who made up the FAKE stories on the Iran Nuclear sites." Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said the sites had been "destroyed," and CIA Director John Ratcliffe said Iran's nuclear program was "severely damaged." In a CBS Face the Nation interview aired June 29, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said Iran could, "in a matter of months," have "a few cascades of centrifuges spinning and producing enriched uranium." He said the facilities suffered severe but not total damage, NPR reported. On July 2, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell estimated the program had been degraded by "probably closer to two years," and he also repeated the "obliterated" characterization.

Jun 2025 Strikes and the first "obliterated" claim

Hours after the June 21, 2025 American strikes on Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan, President Trump said in a White House address that "Iran's key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated" (Times of Israel, ABC). The next morning, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine said final battle damage "will take some time." He added that initial assessments showed "extremely severe damage and destruction" at all three sites (PolitiFact). On June 22, ABC's Jonathan Karl asked Vice President Vance whether the facilities had been obliterated. Vance said he was "not exactly sure what the difference is" between "severely damaged" and "obliterated" (ABC). On June 23, PolitiFact reported that military experts widely agreed the "obliterated" description was premature. It also reported that IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi had said he personally believed Iran's fuel stockpile was moved before the strikes.
